Mitzah Trip to New Orleans

April 17, 2010

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?

On Monday, August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans. Most of the city survived the initial devastation. The next day, however, the levee system that keeps New Orleans dry failed in over fifty places. Many communities of New Orleans continue to struggle to rebuild, over four years later. The destruction of these neighborhoods was not due to an act of God, but rather mishaps caused by man.

Last year, TDHS traveled with a group of two chaperones, three young adults and eleven teenagers to lend our hands toward the ongoing work of rebuilding this shattered city. The experience was life-changing on many levels, and we knew that we had to return.

Please join us April 7-12, 2010, as we again assist the people of New Orleans.
This trip is open to any member of TDHS age 14 and up who is in good physical condition. The trip dates fall after Passover, and coincide with the proposed Spring Break for the Bellevue School District.

Highlights will include:

  • Sort food for a local food bank
  • Enjoy the music and cuisine of this historic city
  • Help restore homes in the lower 9th ward (activities may include light gardening, painting, and other light construction as needed)
  • Worship with the members of Greater Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church
  • Attend Shabbat services in one of New Orleans’ historic Reform congregations
  • Enjoy a sporting event or other cultural activity (TBD)
  • Make great friendships with other TDHS members, and with the people of New Orleans
  • Feel great about the acts of Tikkun Olam you are performing, and earn community service credit

This is a great opportunity for families! The approximate cost per person (based on last year’s trip) is $1000 or less, including airfare. We will be engaging in ongoing fundraising in an effort to defray the cost for all participants. Some scholarship opportunities may also be available. A non-refundable deposit of $150 per person is due by Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Please make checks payable to TDHS, and put “New Orleans Trip” in the subject line.

Lo Alecha HaM’lacha Ligmor, V’lo Atah Ben-Chorin L’Hibateil Mimenah. You are not required to complete the task, but neither are you free to abstain from it. –Pirke Avot 2:16
