TIKKUN OLAM: Repairing the World...One Mitzvah at a Time

Tikkun Olam, the healing and repairing of the world, is a primary mission of the Jewish people.  It is a communal obligation.  The mission of Tikkun Olam at Temple De Hirsch Sinai is to fully engage the membership of our synagogue in the sacred work of repairing our world through the performance of ma'asim tovim (good deeds).

Caring Community

At Temple De Hirsch Sinai, we are a family of families.  As such, we believe it is important to help one another in times of hardship.  To that end, we are currently forming a Caring Community program, offering services to fellow congregants in need. Our program is evolving, and our primary focus this year will be on helping congregants by providing meals, driving to doctor appointments, and running errands. We hope to expand our services as our committee grows.

No matter how much or little time you have available, we'd love to have your help.  Join our wide-reaching group of volunteers making a difference in the lives of members in need.  To find out more about joining us, please contact Gayle Carrol at g.carrol@hotmail.com.

We belong to a wonderfully diverse and caring community that can provide support to individuals and families during difficult times.  Please contact us if you are in need of services or know of someone who could use a helping hand. You can reach us by emailing Gayle Carrol at g.carrol@hotmail.com or calling (206) 323-8486, ext. 7309.

Through these and other mitzvot, we help heal the world close to home. And, we often become better acquainted and warmer friends in the process. Congregational life and all of Jewish tradition should ensure that we need not face any situation or problem alone.

Sound Alliance

Temple De Hirsch Sinai, along with other Reform congregations throughout the U.S., is exploring new ways to organize within our congregation, as well as new ways to make a difference in our community.  The URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) calls this movement “Just Congregations.”

Here in Seattle, our community-organizing agency is called Sound Alliance. Sound Alliance has identified a number of community issues of concern: Immigration/Civil Rights, Housing, Health Care, Education, and Sustainable jobs/environment.

In the coming weeks and months, the Sound Alliance committee of TDHS will be reaching out to congregants to determine where your particular concerns lie. For more information please contact Rabbi Alan Cook at 206-323-8684 or acook@tdhs-nw.org.

Want to Join Us? We Need Your Help!

Want to get more involved with Tikkun Olam efforts at Temple? There are many ways to help and we’d love to have you join us. It's lots of fun and a terrific way to connect with Temple.  Please contact Catherine Gonchar at (206) 323-8486, ext. 7309, or send an email to tikkunolam@tdhs-nw.org.
